In Response To: Present thoughts about the future *long* (Hedgemony) I know that I, personally, have come across increasingly negative about things both privately and publicly about certain aspects of the game more and more frequently. I don't like that. It bothers me. It's disconcerting. It downright blows my mind that, at times recently, I've caught myself going, "This isn't a game I want." When I try to express any of what I'm feeling to anyone, I inevitably become lost. There's a lot to be excited for, but there's also a lot that concerns me, and that's seemingly where I get turned around. I won't lie, I saw Hedge's post pretty soon after it went up, and I wanted to reply immediately, but I didn't know what to say, or how. I simply don't know where I stand anymore. I hear about the direction the story is going, and I love it. I see the new engine, and I'm blown away by how gorgeous it is. And then, some part of me reminds the rest, that I'm staring at screenshots, and that we haven't actually gotten any solid gameplay yet, any solid trailer, any solid look at the game. And then that's followed up with an inner commentary on how all the details are wrong. It shouldn't matter. It's just a game. But it does matter, and it bothers me so very much. A frigate that doesn't look even remotely the same. Familiar armor that's suddenly not so familiar. Well worn characters and enemies with makeovers that don't entirely make sense to me. I try to remember all that has happened before. I try to remember that ship designs have changed in the past. I try to remember that armor has changed dramatically. It may have not been applied to a character near and dear to me, but it was there, in the variants for multiplayer. I try to remember that those well worn characters have received new looks so frequently, it was like they were slipping into the latest fashion for Fall. What's troubling and irritating to me on a personal level, is that as much as I try to remember that, it doesn't seem to help. I cannot figure out why. Is it because it's not Bungie as you said? Is it the scale and breadth of the changes? I don't know. The irritation escalates when I remember how patient I've been. How willing I am to wait for information. That it will come when it comes. And that when it finally did come, it came in the form of a vague laundry list of changes in a magazine article that made absolutely none of it sound appealing, and created so many questions, too many questions, and seemingly answered nothing of relevance. I've finally had to admit my patience has run out, that I'm tired of vague details and the weekly pats on the back in the Bulletins. What I want, I still don't have. What I need to reassure me completely that everything will be alright, isn't anywhere to be found. It is maddening. More-so, when my brain reminds me that I seemingly know more about Borderlands 2, another game I dearly want, than I do about Halo 4. And I'm actively trying to learn everything I can about Halo 4. Sometimes it feels like the X-Files. I want to believe. I cannot articulately disagree with anything you've said Hedge. Especially when I seem to agree with most of it. In fact, I'm pretty sure my attempts to express myself here are entirely inarticulate despite my very best efforts to try and be coherent. I want to be positive. I want everyone to be positive. It downright sucks when I start talking to my friends, my girlfriend even, and none of them have anything positive to say. I feel hurt and I chastise myself for being part of the problem. I think sometimes I forget just how many people, and which people, read what I've written on this forum. Oh I know they're out there, a part of me just... Tunes it out. To that effect, I'd like to address a comment I made earlier today regarding the composer announcement. I said something to the effect of "Negativity -1". I think that was absolutely not true. I was never so entirely pessimistic about the game that the mere announcement of a composer would be enough to raise my expectations a measly one point. I may not entirely agree with things, but I would never wish for this game to fail. I would never wish for this franchise to crash and burn. I would never wish that we just stay where we are, and never change. In fact, I would never want that either. While I think it's been hard for me to find recently, I still have faith that everything will be alright, I'm still optimistic, and I still want to guide the Chief through his next adventure. I'm just more than ready for some actual context. I'm antsy. I'm anxious. The more time that passes, the worse it gets, the harder it is to stay calm and reasonable. So I think I will take that deep breath, and try to relax again. If I'm lucky, this wall of text will make some sense to someone. I don't think my feelings on the matter are any clearer, but if even one person can relate with where I'm coming from, and understand it, I'll consider it a success. To the men and women at 343i: I may not agree with everything you've done, and Halo 4 is still a mystery wrapped in an enigma to me, one that's very, very frustrating, but I want you to know that I care. Deeply. And that's why I have, on occasion, been very publicly negative about things. But more than that, I think it's a phenomenal thing at the end of the day, just how much MORE than me each and every person in that building cares. At the end of the day, I think that's what matters the most, and I cannot think of a better group to carry this Universe forward than one that cares as deeply as you do. I may not always act like it, but I'm forever looking forward to it.
