In Response To: Present thoughts about the future *long* (Hedgemony) This is EXACTLY the kind of message I would love to see more of, and I imagine that there are a lot of people out there who feel just like you do, but maybe they are either unwilling or afraid to bring it to a forum like this. And who can blame them? This and many other public places that were once bastions of tantalizing thought and speculation have turned into lion dens of members who will never be pleased, and are quick to find the negative in anything. There is absolutely a difference between having an opinion and expressing one. It's all in the delivery. Am I going to be 100% pleased about every single aspect of Halo 4? Most likely not, but I'm going to damn well try to focus on those qualities that I love the most. Some times it just requires boiling down the game to it's core values in your own eyes. For me, like you, it's in the story, the adventure, the experience. There is no way certain details should carry nearly as much weight as they do sometimes. "That texture is awful." "Bloom RUINS the game." "Chief's armor is a different shade of green, I hate you 343!" If a game's value rests on things like this to be a complete on/off success or failure, you should probably just stop playing. Maybe everything. But if you can focus on the core elements that drew you to the franchise in the first place, and focus on the positives, you'll end up making yourself and everyone around you much happier. I tend to view 343 like I would someone preparing a birthday or Christmas gift for a loved one. I have a very close family and we have a long tradition of giving each other some amazing gifts that have truly come from loving hearts and willing hands. I would never, in a hundred million years look at a hand-carved object that a brother gave to me and say, "Good try, but these lines here completely throw off the whole piece. It ruins the whole thing." I look at the heart and effort behind that craft, and THAT'S what I fall in love with. It's what paints then entire project with a better light. I imagine the folks at 343 feel the same; people who lovingly spend long hours at the office, sacrificing time with loved ones and friends, all making something for us. For me. They are working their asses off to give us an incredible experience and story, from the lowest employee to the highest, from the smallest feature to the largest. And I'll be damned if I'm going to spit on their efforts because of a few details here or there. I'm lucky enough to have been able to form long-lasting and great relationships with some of the people over there, and I see them like friends and family, and plan on receiving their gift as such. Maybe we should lose our sense of entitlement. $50-$100 is NOT ENOUGH to justify some of the attitudes I see sometimes. Does that mean we have to adore everything, or that we can never share our opinions that might be negative? No, but you better bring both sides of the glass to the table. If you are a member who can only find something wrong with the game, then maybe a step back is what you need to take. And if you are a member who truly loves and adores the Halo Universe and its creators both past and present, then I challenge you to join in the conversation and help add to the positive thoughts and excitement surrounding what should be an amazing experience for us all if we let it be. Thanks Hedge, for bringing such thoughts to our shores; may it be the first of many ships to arrive bearing well-wishes and excited eyes and ears. And 343, thank you for taking up the Mantle with such courage and grace. May your efforts be rewarded and adored by us, your friends and extended family here at this site and the many others that call your creation home. <3 Grim
