They're why I referred to Halo 4 as "Call of Halo" earlier. Halo has always been about starting all players on an even playing field. Everybody started with the exact same gear in the first trilogy, and even though Reach introduced loadouts, it didn't stray from that balancing act as whatever loadouts are present in a gametype, every player can choose from them. No one player or subset of players in a match had access to gear that wasn't available to other players. You didn't have to rank up to unlock jetpack, camo, or armor lock. It's that balancing act that set Halo apart from games like Call of Duty where new players had access to only the most basic gear and abilities and had to grind, grind, grind their way to be on a more even playing field with more experienced players.

Halo 4 changes all that. For the first time, players will not have automatic access to all the gear present in the game. They must be unlocked just like perks do in COD. This is the most radical departure from the Halo formula in the history of the series. Having to earn x amount of credits to unlock a gameplay-affecting feature is simply unheard of. Imagine if you needed, say, 500,000 cR and a rank of General to unlock armor lock in Reach. It's radically imbalanced, favoring people who have played longer and screwing newer players over, and that lack of balance is one of the main reasons I don't play COD. But 343I is apparently creating some bizarre, abominable hybrid of Halo and COD, bringing us all the same unbalanced Skinner box bullshit that Halo had, until now, been thankfully free of. Whatever happened to playing the game for fun? Having to level grind just so I can unlock active camo or x-ray vision or whatever just to play on an even level with those who do have those things would just make it feel like a second job. It's pathetic that game designers need to trap us in a Skinner box by enticing us with external rewards that require tedious grinding to unlock. It's totally antithetical to how Bungie approached Halo. 343I didn't really endear themselves to me with that piece of crap title update, and if all this new stuff is standard for Halo 4's MP, then I don't see myself bothering with it. It just wouldn't be Halo. It'd be just some other generic FPS that just happens to be set in the Halo-verse.
