I think I put it a bit too concretely, perhaps I should have said that consumers want LESS challenging games these days. there will always be an element of difficulty to a game (or else it's not a game at all). But people these days (myself included) want something that doesn't take months to master, but something like potato chips. you don't have to practice for potato chips - you just eat them when you want, and they're always there ready for you to come back to. I don't see anything wrong with that, it's just different from the status quo. That's life.

people cheat because they want the stupid coins (the in game currency with which you buy new drawing colors, etc). which is dumb and i refuse to play with those people.

no? i'm talking about the experience of drawing something and having someone guess what you drew. that's what's important in games (these days). just look at the 'story mode' of mass effect 3. not my cup of tea, mind you, but it's there because some people just want the cinematic experience. That's what they're trying to deliver. Traditionally that 'experience' has had a good bit of competitiveness within it, but less so nowadays (if sales are to be believed as an accurate predictor of what people want).

It's not a big deal, things change. So the experience of halo moves from "get really good at something and be competitive" to "get ok at something and have fun shooting your bros, while earning spartan dollars to buy armor abilities and episodic content". If it honestly is bad and people don't like it, things will change. If people DO like it, they'll just be happy. I for one think it's a positive trend.

once upon a time the experience of movies changed - they added sound! I watched a movie about it recently, it was pretty much about a dog though. Anyway, movies got sound, and the people who were used to text-only cried! But everything turned out OK. Throughout human history people have been saying "everything is turning to crap". Well maybe it is, but fortunately there will always be people who find that crap delicious.
