Let me just tell you that someone (or a group of someones) over there felt that the ending made sense and was appropriate and worked. I went into the ending and couldn't believe how incoherent it was. I'm still not completely sure about what one of the choices even does (even after having seen it), and the overall ending itself just makes no sense (all theories and speculation aside). It's essentially not even an ending. Literally. It's completely incoherent and doesn't seem to resolve anything, let alone make any sense.
This isn't an outrage over "omg they killed everyone and everything" or "omg why did everyone live" or "omg why didn't it end in such and such way", but an ending that's just completley incoherent, nonsensical (literally, not subjectively), and really, really disappointing considering all of the choices, decisions, and what's going on (total chaos and war) at that ending scene. Two endings are nearly identical while one ending makes users question whether the other endings are even real (see indoctrination theory, which I won't get into to avoid spoilers).
Unfortunately, the reaction from the studio itself makes it pretty clear that the theories aren't true, this was a total shock to them, and even though the ending probably makes sense in some jaded way to the people inside the studio, the public at large (no loud minority here) just doesn't get it and is extremely at a loss for what they were thinking and what actually happened. This isn't some Halo 2 ending or even a Halo 3 ending hinting at a sequel. This doesn't appear to set up another game or even conclude this trilogy. What happened? Who knows! So it was all a waste of time? Maybe, but who knows! That's a sucky feeling to have after five years of investment in one of the most fantastic game series of all time.
Thank god I love BioWare, or I might have written them off after that ending. They made a mistake and they're trying to own up to it. They're about the only studio aside from Bungie who I've seen time and time again make unbelievable games and actually truly give a damn about their community year after year, game after game. I have faith they won't screw this up. Do I want them to rewrite the ending? Not exactly. Do I want them to make sense of it somehow or expand on whatever nonsense we just saw? Absolutely.
