I like the idea of it also. The only reason I have a problem with it is because we were promised sixteen different endings that heavily depended on what you did throughout the game, what choices you made, who lived and who died... and instead we got just ~~one~~three endings with slightly different tweaks that really had little to nothing to do with the rest of the game, or series for that matter. I don't feel "entitled" to a better ending, I'm just disappointed with false promises and how little your decisions throughout the series really mattered in the end.
I don't care for happy endings myself also, but without the Mass Relays conventional FTL would be ill fit to transport the various species back to their homeworlds. Unless every ship in the galaxy has huge Cryo-bays, Earth would first be overrun by Krogan and Rachni, then everybody would starve to death. Even with cryo, you remember how much fuel you use up traveling from system to system with FTL? I'm sure bigger ships and fleets have more, but certainly not enough to travel from one side of the galaxy to the other. Galactic trade routes would be destroyed, thus colonies and places like Omega would see mass starvation within months. Not to mention the Quarians would probably become extinct. The cycle would be completed regardless of the defeat of the Reapers.
Also, Joker would NEVER chicken out, leave Shepard, and run from the fight. I absolutely refuse to accept otherwise.
