Doesn't need to be a particular new mechanic. The typical suggestion here is to simply make all the weapons have high skill ceilings; that is, make sure the game has fast movement and snappy movement acceleration, and use relatively little aim assist. In this case, you'd still be defeated if the person with the drop completely optimizes their kill time, but the idea is that this would become somewhat impressive in itself. Sort of like how most people don't complain about unfairness in Tribes when they suffer a direct hit from a spinfusor while flying at 400kph.
