Say, for example, you've encountered someone at close/medium-close range. You've shot them a couple of times because you're a better shot, you got the jump on them, or both.

Without bleedthrough, that person can run up to you and mash B twice to kill you. As long as they get the first melee hit you're dead, because you haven't taken down their shields yet, and anything you do won't kill him before he kills you. If you melee while he still has even a little shield left, he kills you because you only do enough damage to take down the shield and he's already ahead in the melee race. If you keep shooting, he kills you because your shots won't kill quick enough.

With bleedthrough, if the guy tries to save himself by mashing B in your direction, you win because you've taken down his shields enough with your shots to kill him with 1 melee (thanks to bleedthrough).

So, bleedthrough doesn't make melees weaker per se. In fact, it can only make them stronger since they can do shield+health damage now. But it decreases the effectiveness of the "I'm losing so I'm going to charge forward and mash B" strategy.

I'm eagerly anticipating people on this forum with a 1.2 K/D ratio to tell me how I'm discounting the amount of skill required to sprint in front of people and repeatedly slam on the B button.
