// At the beginning of the project nobody thought about these hard-to-access places from the original game. For a typical game, developers simply restrict access to those areas, and don't need to worry about high-resing additional art or work on performance issues related to seeing giant sections of the levels. Unfortunately for ANNIVERSARY we did not have that luxury—the franchise team established that those areas were an integral part of the game and they had to be maintained in the remake (this was a very foreign concept to the devteam, and we had to reinforce it many times for the artists).
Looks like free roving is just anathema to all developers.
They need education and more education.
