Since you're drawing other stuff and it is working, I don't think this might be the problem, but I'll just say it anyway. Is the "Use Artboard" option checked when you're trying to save? It is supposed to be checked, lest the program tries to save the entire space available, not just what you draw... Also, one small tidbit I've heard, and I quote, is: "Rename your AIPREFS.AI file to .save and try again." I'll keep looking, anyway.
