In Response To: Re: Maybe the TU is just exposing another problem. (DEEP NNN)

: The part you underlined was certainly on my mind when I wrote it and I'm not
: surprised someone picked that up.

: I don't know what can be done about the problem. This is where the developer
: has to use all of their statistical information to measure what it takes
: to keep people satisfied and playing.

: I tried to write some thoughtful comments on skill matching and it was
: getting out of control so I gave up.

: If we look at two playlists where it could be expected the more highly
: skilled would go to play we might get some answers. ARENA and MLG. Both
: have proven to have smallish populations with AREA being decried as an
: outright failure. Why? Because there is a good chance a player might lose?
: Maybe.

: If we look at a playlist where perhaps (shooting) skill plays a smaller role
: we see another part of the story. Living Dead. Ridiculously popular. I
: have no idea what skill ranges frequent that playlist but the voices I
: hear are extremely young.

: Imposing too much skill matching into MM could cause some kind of segregation
: fallout.

: I think it might help many of us forum dwellers if 343i would post REACH's
: population percentages by skill level (KD?). It should be done for both MM
: and non-MM. Bungie did that at least once for MM during the 0-50 days.

: Playlist management has to be one of the most difficult jobs I can imagine.
: So many issues to deal with. Skill, fun, social diversity, time zones,
: cultural differences, gender, statistical analysis to name some. No matter
: what choices you make, someone hates you. I hope 343i never puts a name to
: the playlist manager.

Arena has the most strict skill matching in all of Reach, and from what I've seen even more strict that Halo 3's Ranked playlists.

In Arena, you're much more likely to get hard games at your skill level - which might disinterest people, as they like getting those curbstomp games (see also: the reaction over the fixed Infection maps from certain people)

Reducing the strictness in other lists allows for faster matching and more games. However, variables such as guests, not having played at least 30 games in a list, the people you're matching against not having played 30 games yet, whether that person is "showing up" for the game, etc make it hard to tell what's going on.

If you play with separate groups it's really easy to tell when someone is dragging the TS average up or down. Take my brother for example. Him and his friends barely play Reach and when they do they're not taking it super serious. If I join them it's like feasting on pubbies.

However if I join a party of someone closer to the middle, they'll get annoyed that I start to kite higher skilled players into games - I do well but they get their face mauled.

It even happens in Reach and Halo 3 when I join parties - I play a lot more than most of my clanmates (who can be described as playing Reach regularly, but not anything close to a ton of games) I'll pull harder players in the game. They'll go from a 10 game win streak in Squad and as soon as I'm invited to the party, the next game will suddenly be a lot closer or a big loss. In Halo 3, the party would start pulling Generals as soon as I joined in BTB. I had over 500 exp in BTB post-TU2, let alone what I played in it before that, so I'm willing to bet my invisible Trueskill was pretty up there.

The issue with ANY skill matching system is once you go beyond 1v1, the match becomes a lot more complicated. Mixed skill parties are hard to deal with and Trueskill works best in FFA environs, not team vs team. This is why the launch version of Arena had the FFA system of ranking since it gave Trueskill a lot more accurate reading (apparently too accurate in Bungie's eyes, and I disagree with them on making Arena win/loss).

If you wanted a super even playlist for teams, we'd have to see something like a Team Mercenaries where the max party size is 1 but the team sizes are 4-6. You wouldn't have the mix skill issue but you'd need the population to support it.
