In Response To: VENERANCE Announced - CryEngine 3 Mod *56K warn* (The Lionheart)
(In before naysayers and worryworts!)
Don't worry about Cease and Desist Orders or anything like that. This has been WELL investigated (Oh, brother, believe you me, it's been WELL investigated), and before we even thought of making this announcement we were sure we'd be fine.
We play by the rules. :) And the rules are a lot clearer and a lot friendlier than they ever were before.
* No money involved. At all. Ever. This is a labor of love and an opportunity for people to show what they can do and get better at doing it in the process, not to mention get the experience from working with a team on a Mod; Bungie has said in the past and it is continually said still today in the industry that if you want to get experience outside of paid work in the games industry, one of the best things you can do is join a Mod Team.
* There will be no ripped assets used (models, textures, etc) from the Halo games when this thing is released. We make our own stuff (and we make it as canonically accurate as possible. Expect lots of harrassment from us, Mr. Loftus. ;) Well, you know. More than we've already given you.). And we hope that when this thing's released, you'll be glad that we did it that way.
* We respect and love the developers. What they say, goes. We really don't want them to pull the car over. o_O
We are actually aiming for a higher level of detail than what we would be able to make consoles run, so while we *adore* the assets from the Halo games and all the spit-polish put on every model, texture, etc, our goals would not be satisfied with what we could accomplish with 512MB of total system memory, as is the case with the 360. Our aim is to push the CryEngine 3 to its absolute limits on modern-day hardware in a way that makes great use of a 1920x1080 resolution, in 3D and 2D.
* Now, that said, there's always the absurdly unlikely possibility (snowball's chance) that 343 Industries is making their own Sigma Octanus IV gameplay mission. If that were the case, then we would gladly step out of their way and shift our ambitions.
Trust me though, when I say: *insert audio clip of the Chief talking to Guilty Spark* "That's... not going to happen."
