While there's no evidence for these accusations, I feel the same way. There was nothing but personal gain for the director and his studio. This project didn't have a "community" feel to it at all, and the way they pushed merchandise for the film was ridiculous. Even before the damn trailer came out, they were making promises of DVDs, t-shirts, soundtracks, art books, etc. People- no, the Halo community- were supposed to take them on blind faith. That's not cool.
