It seems likely that the : S-IIIs rarely had an opportunity to engage a real Scarab. Carter was : clearly (to me at least) at Death's doorstep, Emile and Six were acquired : by the Scarab on the highground, caught with small arms on a narrow : mountain road with no cover or escape and no time. it was the only option. Aside from the reasoning that if another Spartan and an ODST can do it, and players did it fairly often without heavy weapons, it should be no problem for an S-III, there's the layout, which is to say, they had plenty of time to get in cover. The Scarab's main gun takes a few seconds to aim, charge, and fire-- I'd say it's exaggerated in that cutscene, but we all know it's not instant, you can move out of the way. If they had just run instead of standing there asking each other who was going to do what they would've been in the next crevice (crevasse?) before the Scarab could turn around and completely gone before it could blast a hole to get a clear shot, and the fact they did stand around talking and not die (at least not then) reinforces that fact. Their biggest concern would've been someone on it throwing a plasma grenade and getting a lucky stick (come to think of it, I would've preferred that death over Kat's headshot, at least then you could get that "what was that-- oh no get it off-- no, I'm dead... get back..." look). Heck, I think I could make it before the Scarab fired. So the problem isn't so much the death or how or why it happened (necessarily) as that the whole encounter feels a little contrived.
