You can see the disc of Jupiter with a relatively low-power : telescope, but you need something a lot more powerful to see Betelgeuse's : disc (it was first seen in 1920). My el cheapo scope can see Jupiter's : disc plain as day, but Jupiter's moons and Betelgeuse are all point : sources (the latter far brighter than the former, of course). Betelgeuse's : apparent diameter is far less than that of Io, Europa, Ganymede, and : Callisto. I guess I was thinking plain old eyeballs. I can see both but they appear like dots of light. I have seen the Galilean moons though binoculars though. When I was in my university Astronomy courses the university has a 40cm telescope on campus. It was cool to see Jupiter and its moons from there as well as the moon large enough you couldn't get the full moon in the view. :)
