In Response To: As much as I enjoyed Reach . . . (Seraph XXVII)
I think it's a solid game, with good characters (they could have been handled better, but at least they still feel real), and I have no qualms about its canonicity. I believe everything fits into the known canon, including the dates. Bungie and 343 have stated that it's so, and I believe them. If people choose to overlook the fact that they've outright stated that "it fits" regardless of whether we can see how or not, that's not my problem. It does lead to an interesting time in the fandom, however, where I can't go to my favorite Halo site without seeing threads talking about how Reach is the worst game in the series for its inconsistencies and so on, which has left much lacking from the usually intelligent discussions that I've had on sites like this about Halo and its story. It's lead to a time where the best discussions are about multiplayer, because when the story is brought up, everyone groans and turns the other way. I still hold to my belief that the biggest mistake being made with Halo at the moment is actually being made by its fans.
All of that being said, I don't enjoy playing Reach nearly as much as the other games. Why?
Because it took a more human approach and was more character focused, it lost its focus on the larger threads which brought me to Halo in the first place. There's very little sense of mystery, there's no larger galactic themes... it's just a story about man fighting to survive. And I think that's great, in a way. I think it's something that needed to happen, so that we could see how a more human-centric focus like what has been shown in the books could apply to a game. It's successful, it works, it's an amazing game and a wonderful new perspective on the Halo universe. It stands out amazingly as a new kind of Halo game and story... but it doesn't leave me wanting to come back for more. Of all the Halo games, I believe Reach is the one I've played the least post-release for that very reason (or at the very least it feels that way, before anyone goes checking my stats). If I had to pick my favorite game to go back to from a fictional standpoint, it would have to be Halo 3. It's a next-gen game, set on Forerunner installations (half the time), and this creates a wonderful setting to explore and question... to look at architecture and think about why a certain shape is the way it is, what function it might serve, etc... and now we have Anniversary for this as well. For all its misteps, Anniversary handles the redesigning of a lot of the Forerunner architecture (on a smaller scale) exceptionally well in my opinion, leading to a lot more time spent exploring what were once familiar corridors. Or... what would be more time spent exploring if I had more time (and less Skyrim). For this reason, I'm very happy that we're returning to the story of Master Chief and some brand new locations, enemies, stories, etc. I'm ready for the mystery again.
