I agree and I think Bungie tended to go along this same route for most of the series (outside of any thought of it sucking, at least I hope so). Nearly every Halo game since Halo 1 has had some form of canon issues with everything else, and even though I can't recall any off the top of my head between Fall of Reach and Halo 1, I'm sure there was some issues there as well. Bottom line, Bungie just wasn't ever really concerned with getting flawless continuity between their own internal Halo timeline and the expanded universe (EU) material. In Halo 2, the Master Chief isn't the only Spartan II alive anymore: he knows it and the people who followed the books also know it... yet not one peep is uttered about the strangeness of the Chief having to solely go through all of Halo 2 and 3 without ANY Spartan support (not including Sgt. Johnson's help). That's just one example of the disconnect between the game mythology and the expanded universe material, and while the fact of the Chief solely going it alone in H2 and H3 doesn't necessarily directly contradict the EU books, neither does Reach. They're just a bit more flagrant with some of their facts, and in their own way require nearly the same suspension of disbelief between knowing the EU story and trying to reconcile it with the main campaign.
