They were uncovering an artifact for : almost a month, but they seemed to only really know what it was for by the : events of Halo 3. Recall the Brute comm in the crashed dropship that : indicates they found something under the surface. Also, Truth's personal : viewing of the area under the Datahive. It would seem they only discovered : the portal's purpose late even though they knew a Forerunner artifact lay : hidden between Mombasa and Voi. Could be. However, some of the videos in Waypoint indicate Regret knew what he was looking for from the start. Though it's also said that Regret and Truth were hiding things from each other, so it may be that the information of what the artifact was never reached Truth or his forces and thus they'd learn its purpose a lot later. In addition, it seems ODST does kind of step in the toes of Halo 3 in this regard - it's clearly the indication in H3 that the Covenant had just begun unearthing the artifact a few days ago at the most, given some of the dialogue by the Covenant as well as ONI recon III's report during Tsavo Highway.
