S2s' relationship with Halsey

There is a channel to their relationship through which "motherly" thoughts go, but in general, I think the books more indicate that the maternal channel was either overridden by or heavily imposed upon by the "leader" channel. They knew that Mendez reported to Halsey, and that Halsey was the person who needed to be pleased with them the most. If everyone but Halsey was happy about something, then it didn't matter because Halsey was displeased. And if she ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. For realz.

The relationship changed over the course of the years, from when they were kids to when they were out in the world, and their "childhood" was more of a memory.

I think that the fact that Halsey represented pretty much the only thing that was familiar to them once they went out into the universe, planet-hopping across the area of human-patrolled space, caused Halsey to become more to them than she was before, in their minds.

So, in other words, while she may not have seemed to them like much of a mother figure when they were kids as she did an authority figure, that somewhat changed as time went by and they had no mother figure to look back on except her. She's still not thought of, when the S2s are adults, as "Mom with a warm smile and a fresh batch of cookies", of course not. But I am saying that she was, in their minds, MORE like a mother to them than she was when they were kids.

One thing that contributes to this is that while they were kids, she was pushing them, holding them accountable for results (though I think mostly she was holding their handlers and Mendez accountable for results) and such, but once they were "graduated" she was constantly in the support role, getting them upgrades, gear, equipment, being their personal guardian angel as much as she possibly could. HER ROLE changed dramatically once the majority of them "washed out".

Anyone got anything that indicates otherwise?
