I thought Frankie just said "there's a canon reason" for the changes, and added that "he's been in space for a very long time", which isn't really saying much. He also emphasized that some of it is "definitely artistic evolution". Still, my point was that even if they come up with an explanation that he woke up at some point, put on a new suit of armor and then went back to cryo, it's a silly and forced excuse from a storytelling standpoint.

Now, I don't know if the explanation will be that simple, likely not, but given the state the Chief and the FUD are in, I can't see a naturally fitting story explanation happening. In terms of narrative, Cortana awakening the Chief in the beginning of H4 loses a large portion of the impact it might have otherwise had if he has already been awake at some point between H3 and H4 and put on a new suit of armor that was for some reason stored on the FUD. If that's the case, it would be better if they didn't try to forcibly work it into the fiction and simply said it's a redesign.

Besides the canon reason, there's also the fact the design of the new suit is a massive departure from the previous ones. Whether one likes the new direction or not is subjective, but IMO, they shouldn't go and completely redesign what is easily one of the most iconic and recognizable suits of armor in pop culture. I'd be fine with the obvious graphical enhancements or changes in little details like those between H2 and H3, but I just don't see the point for a total overhaul.
