Back in Halo 2, the explanation for the change was a lot more logical. We didn't see most of the intermediate time between H1 and 2, or even FS and H2, which means there was plenty of window for things to happen; in H2's case, he had just put the Mark VI armor on right before the game begins. If the H4 trailer is to be believed, however, we start right where H3 left off, with the Chief popping from his cryotube sporting the new armor. I can't see much room for an explanation that would make any sort of sense. H2 and H3 had a similar situation, where it would be nigh-impossible to have a feasible explanation for a major armor change, and Bungie just went with a higher-detail version of the H2 design. They changed the gloves, yeah, but that's nothing compared to a total redesign.

As for the design looking "chiefy", the helmet is similar but I think the armor overall has very little in common with any of the MJOLNIR designs we've seen before. If they changed the helmet and the color of the armor, you could mistake it to any generic video game space trooper armor. Meanwhile, the previous designs, while noticeably different, shared several common characteristics, such as the general shape of the shoulder pauldrons or the placement of most armor pieces. Totally redesigning the shoulders, for example, breaks the silhouette of the armor. I think game artists there days, with so many polygons to play with, underestimate the importance of having a recognizable and well-defined silhouette or general design, instead cramming in as much detail as possible.

I'm all for "artistic evolution" as Frankie put it, but to me "evolution" would be more like polishing the existing design instead of just throwing it all away and starting from scratch. It also tells a lot about the artists and 343's artistic control; they have the power to redesign everything, and they're not afraid to make the most of it. I guess there's still hope, since they said the current armor isn't final. Fixing "the bulge" and the shoulders should be the first things to do, but there's a lot of other things I'm hoping they'd change.
