Scripted behavior. Banshees do have a Flee behavior, but I don't think you can do anything to trigger it on-foot- mostly for dogfighting.

: 2) Halo 3 had 3 scarab encounters (The Storm, The Ark, and the two on The
: Covenant). ODST only had one "real" encounter on Kikowani
: Station, and we saw scripted ones climbing over the the highway and the
: one that attacks the Elephant but keeps going. In Reach, we have a double
: Scarab encounter but we cannot fight them and must just drive past them,
: and the one that is killed by Carter ramming it in a cutscene.

: Did you ever want to add "MOAR SCARAB"? Did you ever consider
: having one actually get on the highway and attack the player in ODST, or
: have one show up at the final defense? Was an actual encounter ever
: considered for Reach, or is it like the carriers/banshees flying over the
: highway in ODST, where you wanted to just add to the feeling of danger in
: the area?

There was no plan for another scarab AI encounter in ODST on the highway because we didn't have time or had planned a scarab. It crossed my mind near the end though. Reach did not have Scarab AI or a working Scarab.

: 3) Who's idea was it to use the BSP from Silent Cartographer in the final run
: of Halo 3? I noticed the exploding tiles also somewhat actually follow the
: hill-geometry from Halo 1, so that's a nice attention to detail.

: Also, the way you rigged explosions to occur at jumps was great for creating
: action-movie screenshots !

That was my idea. We were desperate for more geometry on the trench run and I suggested it would be funny if we could put the silent cartographer (B30) level in. I even placed the plates to mimick some of the geometry (as you noticed).

: 4) Can you talk about the extra Blind skull on Cortana (Halo 3), or about the
: "terminal" on Cortana that triggers a Cortana freakout moment?
: Older version of the Terminal concept left in the final game?

The extra blind skull was an old placement of the skull. I think we forgot to remove it from the level- so a second skull is there but does nothing.

: 5) At what point was it determined that you'd use Reflection (Ivory Tower) in
: New Alexandria? The use of this multiplayer map in the campaign seemed
: like just a justification to have it in the campaign somehow while having
: it make sense as a campaign space and so you'd have another spot to have
: the Crazy Marine egg again :P

This was the very beginning of the level. Someone came to me and asked me if I had room for Ivory Tower- because if I didn't place it, the multiplayer level would be cut due to lack of polish time. Because we put it in the level it made more room on the schedule to ship it. The crazy marine was originally placed in the little pond where the sword was- but he was too easy to find.

: 6) There's a building you pass through on Uplift right before you cross the
: bridge where the space tether tears apart. In this room is a cool set of
: lights, and a ghost strategically placed under these lights to show off
: the cool (cubemapped?) reflection effect on the ghost. Was that a mission
: designer or did an artist request that? As someone who has made a game or
: two myself, that was kind of blatant "Check out our work!" :P

Dunno. Probably not, but who knows! I don't think we had that sort of time to think about it on that project.
