In Response To: Re: You have an odd definition of "update" then... (uberfoop) : In what sense? Updates are changes to something that tend to preserve what it : is, while bringing it, well, "up to date." I fail to see how the : multiplayer modes of Halo's 2, 3, and Reach can possibly be construed that : way; there is far too much qualitative difference. Even if you want to : call those games "updates" of each other, which is still a : huge stretch, there is a huge gap between their approach to gameplay and : Halo 1's. This is most strongly reflected in the grenade behavior, the : movement speed, the innacuracies of most weapons in Halo 1, and the fact : that, in many common gametypes, users spawn with a weapon that actually : gives them a fighting chance against people with power weapons. If you mean the pistol, I think you mean "is a power weapon". :-) The things that some of the multiplayer purists liked about Halo 1 is something that Bungie deliberately changed in the later games-- namely, the degree to which expressed skill allows for differentiation on the scoreboard. The gap between "best" and "worst" is at its widest in Halo 1 multiplayer, and in general, has narrowed with each successive variant, while maintaining many other aspects. I'd say that's called an "update" except for those who considered that noticeable skill gap the defining feature-- especially with regards to pistol proficiency. There are plenty of these players, but I still think they are a minority. I do not believe, and have never believed, that online Halo 1 would have achieved the popularity of the later games. If I were wrong, I would have expected that initial changes in Halo's multiplayer mode would then become less pronounced, and retreat more towards Halo 1's design, over time, but this has not happened, either. I suppose I ought to be as mad about HCEA lacking multiplayer as anyone, as it will deprive me of the opportunity to show this to be the case :)
