: im missing something here could you clarify a little? I'll take a gander. Throughout the trilogy, the chief was always referred to as the Master Chief, or some variant of that. Apart from stuff like "BAD CYBORG!", of course. Even in former times of crisis, such as when he hit the ground rather hard for the first time into a giant hula-hoop, it was always "Chief!" When Cortana spoke to him at the end of Halo 3, it was at a decidedly apocalyptic moment of finality. They were no longer just getting started; this time around, Halo was finished. And both of them could easily have been killed at that moment, but because of what they had done, at some level it didn't even matter. By holding the first name until that moment, it gains a ton of power. It can punctuate the moment with a big damn period. //================ By bandying it about and just using it wherever, it loses that power.
