He has responded in a way that is absolutely consistent with his character, turning what would otherwise be a serious moment for two entirely separate but related reasons-- the woman he's been jokingly trying to pursue has confessed emotions for him, and he's about to be kidnapped in a way that might kill him-- and still he can't express genuine emotion himself, or respond in a way that isn't a moment of levity. He doesn't say "I love you" back or even say "I do, too" he says "I know." Those things are both true, but separate. There just isn't anywhere for the relationship to go after that. Romeo and Juliet don't get married, move to the suburbs and have kids. If they did, nobody would care.
