Long story short, NTSC is a lower resolution (480 vertical lines) at a 60hz refresh rate and is the format used in North America and Japan. PAL is a higher resolution (576 vertical lines) at a 50hz refresh rate and is the format used through most of Europe and former British colonies (excluding Canada). Its the 10hz difference in the refresh rate that translates to games that have a poor PAL conversion being about 17.5% slower than their NTSC counterparts, bearing in mind that most games are developed in NTSC regions. The difference in vertical resolution also meant that most PAL games prior to StarFox 64 (Lylat Wars in Europe) were 'squashed' in a letterbox format. Like watching a TV program intended for a 4:3 TV stretched to fill 16:9 screen. In the earliest games, it also meant the music was slower too. Wave Race 64 probably stands out as one of, if not the, absolute worst PAL conversions of all time. In no small part because even the NTSC version had small borders, to reduce the size of the rendered image for the graphically intensive game. Halo: CE didn't have the worst PAL conversion ever, it was at least full-screen, but it wasn't full speed and it also had a noticeable stutter ever few seconds. : Phooey! Maybe if I ask 343 nice, they could take a knife to it and do some : damage? That last round of butchering worked out just fine by me. Well, you can always just stick to playing the original version, either via disc or Games on Demand. =p Its only a matter of what you're used to. You'll get used to playing it at full speed soon enough, and then you'll realise how much better and smoother it is.
