In Response To: Re: Why i wont be buying HCEA *article* (scarab) : Current engines have gained the ability to render many more polygons. In the : past, designers had to be clever to model stuff with severe limits on the : number of polygons used. They have now been freed from these constraints : and this new freedom has gone to their heads. They have gone detail mad : because they couldn't do this stuff before. This phase will pass once they : have become used to the new state of affairs. They won't over-complicate : their designs just because they can. They will be able to take a more : intelligent approach and will only use dense detail when the esthetics's : of their designs require it. This is something I've noticed over the past few years with games, and if you recall, a complaint that some had about Halo 2. The original Halo was bland but knew how to work within its limitations and managed to look pretty good overall. Although Halo 2 ran on the same hardware, the new engine allowed Bungie to go a little nuts with color and textures in Halo 2, which made the game look better in some aspects, but more cluttered in others. I told a friend that Halo 2 appeared to have been worked on by Epic, since its gameplay and visual style got "Unreal Tournamentcized". Still, I am looking forward to playing with the new graphics if for nothing more than the novelty. But like you, I'll be waiting around for a $15 used copy before snatching it up. I'm not about to pay more than that for a better looking version of a game I already own (multiplayer doesn't interest me, so I could care less about the map packs).
