In Response To: I suggest CEA, and here's why (Rockslider)

: I suggest referring to it as CEA in community circles - or Anniversary if you
: ever want to kick off your abbreviation boots and luxuriate in an entire
: word. It does the job, it's got the iconic CE there which I think is nice,

Except that that's bad.

My issue with "CEA" is that for a Halo game, it doesn't start with an "H". In alphabetical lists, that throws the grouping off, plus it doesn't look right.

"Halo CEA" or "HCEA" or even "H:CEA" I think works better. None are particularly long and don't stray too far in an alphabetical listing of all the games.

: and the brevity makes it handy for inclusion in forum topic titles and
: elsewhere. If you're worried about the lack of an H at the start, it's not
: really needed in our community context and would make things more of a
: mouthful to pronounce.

Within the forum itself, no, because the forum itself has no organizational structure. For those who do pan-Bungie, pan-Halo fansites and use tags to identify content, there's an advantage to having the titles or abbreviations of the titles grouped alphabetically. If forums and sites use the same abbreviation, then it helps people when searching for content on multiple sites.

Right now at R.net I've chosen "HCEA" without the colon, but I can change it, and as long as it isn't something really too long and doesn't break anything I'll probably change that to whatever becomes the standard way of describing the title.

: As for one of the alternatives, H:A, I don't think it's such a good idea to
: have something with a colon in it. H:A is kind of clumsy to write, and in
: speech the colon presumably wouldn't even be represented; you'd just
: pronounce the two letters. As for the simpler alternative HA,
: unfortunately that clashes a bit too much with a real word I think.

I agree, "HA" isn't that good an option, unless one is already attempting to editorialize.
