I think that the type of player that gravitates toward ranked playlists do so because they want something tangible to show to others, to prove they are better than other players, or just to boost their pathetic egos that rely on something insubstantial as a game. These kind are the kind of folks that only have fun playing if they are winning or if they are doing well, they rarely ever play for the enjoyment and camaraderie that comes from playing with friends. If they don't get a permanent symbol next to their gamertag that shows their awesomeness, then they don't want to waste their time. I don't think Arena is a bad system, I just think people have discovered how silly it is to play games for competitive reasons, especially when they don't get something that shows off their ability to others. I think the motivation for competitive players and boosters are close enough that you can't remove the incentive for boosters to play without removing the incentive for competitive players at the same time.
