In Response To: Re: Rebetrayability (uberfoop) : I've always been of the mind that greater mechanical complexity does not : necessarily result in greater gameplay complexity. Sometimes it actually : reduces it, since a massive feature count often requires some fairly : one-dimensional balancing mechanisms in order to keep things in check. : In the case of Halo 3, this issue has always manifested, for me at least, in
True, which is why I actually didn't bring up weapon variety at all. I'd say that variety in available vehicles has a lot more impact. While AI driving is often unreliable and unpredictable, what we want in the desert island scenario is replayability, and uncertainty certainly raises that. The boarding function also adds a lot to the variety, because the player approach to destroying a vehicle is very different from trying to take it intact. Starting with Halo 3 you also have the easy access to skulls which further modify the game experience, which gives you access to difficulty levels higher than legendary, which is something you can't recreate in Halo 1 without the use of honor rules-- say, by voluntarily avoiding power weapons. And since Halo 3's overall gameplay mechanics and balancing
Hmm. I have to admit I haven't found that to be my experience. In fact, H1 Flood encounters are the ones that end up being "instakill when near" because the shotgun is nearly always the best against them when they are near, but completely ineffective at range, and the best weapon at extreme range, the sniper, is damn-near ineffective against them. The RL is fine against them at range, but ammunition is limited. Then of course there is the pistol-- which is pretty much perfect against anything at almost any range, as long as you have it. The only thing you ever have to do against Flood in H1 is camp around a corner with a shotgun. The only exception to this rule is rocket flood. Sure, you can use the plasma weapons against them and they work well, but only if you've got no shotgun, pistol, or RL. In H3 against the Flood I'll use the shotgun, but also the plasma rifle, the needler, plasma grenades (since Flood now don't always just charge you directly, these are a better option than in H1) as well as the beam rifle and the battle rifle. Whereas in Halo CE, the difference
: I see where you're coming from, but I personally find Halo CE's gameplay to
Some of H1's encounters are more dynamic and complex. I think that emphasis on graphical fidelity ended up impacting level design too much, starting with Halo 2. Halo 3 recovers a little bit, but what gameplay depth it does have is assisted more by variety of possible player tactics (weapon, vehicle choice, etc) than by variety of enemy behavior or geographical variety.
