I've always been of the mind that greater mechanical complexity does not necessarily result in greater gameplay complexity. Sometimes it actually reduces it, since a massive feature count often requires some fairly one-dimensional balancing mechanisms in order to keep things in check.

In the case of Halo 3, this issue has always manifested, for me at least, in the form of the weapons not feeling like they have much individual character. And since Halo 3's overall gameplay mechanics and balancing scheme means that infantry battles have to be fought in a "1-by-1 instakill-each-enemy-when-it's-near" sort of way, using one infantry weapon often feels to me a heck of a lot like using a very different infantry weapon, since you have to use it the same way anyway (this happens with everything, but I find it to be a particularly large issue with Halo 3's flood, where fighting in this way is the main option an annoyingly large amount of the time). Whereas in Halo CE, the difference between a needler and a plasma rifle is sometimes the difference between viciously pew-pewing at enemies around trees in the open and drawing enemies into a linear trap.

I see where you're coming from, but I personally find Halo CE's gameplay to be, generally speaking, significantly more dynamic and complex.
