In Response To: Worst line of the series, period. (Kermit) : I hate "were it so easy." It's an idiomatic phrase that is : appropriate if and only if someone makes a statement about something being : easily accomplished, which is exactly the opposite of what Hood is saying. : It's is used incorrectly throughout Halo 3, and ruins every scene in which : it's spoken. HATE IT. I think you're wrong in about every way it is possible to be wrong, both about that line and what it accomplishes. Okay, it's a bit awkward, grammatically, in that way that science fiction is wont to do for aliens speaking English. It DOES work as a response to Hood, because it's not a response to the first part, "hard to believe" but to the second part, "he's really dead". Hood is speaking idiomatically, and the Arbiter is not. Hood is not actually expressing disbelief, you can tell that from his facial expression. He's expressing shock, loss and sadness. He'd like to believe that the Chief is alive. He finds that difficult. He is forced to conclude that the Chief is did, and this is what is difficult to accept. The Arbiter's response that he does not believe the Chief is so easily killed works PERFECTLY in that scene. It's a direct response to his first use of the line, and an expression of the development of a relationship between the Chief and the Arbiter that helped forge their success against the Brutes and the Flood. It gives the audience a sense of the respect the Chief earned from both his comrades and his opponents-- in the body of one character, no less! It works as a perfect response to the Arbiter's first use of the phrase, which centers around his pride in his own ability, and his contempt of his former enemy, now an ally of convenience but no more. The Halo series certainly has its clunkers, but the two uses of that line are not among them.
