(SoundEffect)) : I understood his line in Halo 3 that Johnson's saying about "you two : trying to kill each other" and Arbiter lamenting "Were it so : easy" as he's been trying for a while and can't seem to kill the : Chief. It was never about how easy or hard it would be for the Chief to : kill the Arbiter. Yeah I'd agree more with this... the use of the line at the end seemed out of place for me at first too, but if you consider a poetic way to come full circle, both instances have to do with the relationship between the Arbiter and the Chief. The first, they were about to kill each other (to me, its instance there could be interpreted either way, or both - whether about killing the chief or the arbiter). The second, it seems the 'joke' from the first instance has come to fruition... I think the arbiter is almost speaking that line to himself, a form of lament perhaps, an uncertain end or answer to their first faceoff. I think it means all and none of the mentioned meanings here... that it was neither easy, nor hard, and that there's this sliver of uncertainty about the Chief's destiny (the Arbiter didn't see the Chief's demise, only that he's literally MIA). To me, analyzing the phrase for its grammatical context in the second instance will only lead to confusion and debate. I think that's coming at it from the wrong angle. I see the Arbiter looking up to the sky, responding in his own way to Hood's comment, remembering how the tables had turned between them and how it all began. "Hard to believe he's dead..." "Were it so easy." Is he dead? I could have killed him before; perhaps he was right - it's not easy to kill the Chief. Here's to you, Chief, wherever you are. Live long and prosper.
