In Response To: Re: Dammit, did I miss my cue?! (SonofMacPhisto) : This discussion reminds me a lot of that PAX East panel regarding 'The : Greatest Game of All Time.' Like that panel, which basically settled on : Ocarina of Time as the best ever right from the get go, we'll be able to : name maybe the top one or two characters (Mario? Link?) and constantly : debate the rest. Personally, I'd put Chief lower as well. That's probably : because we're hardcore gamers, and have been exposed to more than the : general public. Chief would certainly deserve to be higher on a list like : this Guinness one because of his impact on the culture at large. Part of the issue is how you're supposed to rate and rank the characters. How well they work in their given story? How awesome they are as independant entities? How complex and sophisticated they are? Similar questions pop up when ranking members of any media. I could certainly agree that, by itself, ODST's soundtrack is arguably the greatest of the Halo series, but as far as how well they work in their respective games, I'd personally give that to Halo CE in a heartbeat. In the case of characters? In Halo CE at least, the Master Chief is pretty much perfect for that game as he is presented and used within it. But I would argue that Durandal is pretty much perfect for the Marathon series as he is presented and used within it, but for very different reasons due to differences of purpose and style. I would never be able to quantitatively rank the two of them, both because they're each perfect for what they do, and because what they do is completely different; one is an ridiculously interesting crazy AI, and the other is a brilliantly applied and styled audience proxy. The differences are absurdly stark; one is interesting in and of itself, and the other succeeds in that it's capable of being simple and completely stylistically coherent with its surroundings such that it exists and has a strong presence without sticking out uncomfortably. Even if we ignore the issue of what things about which characters should be ranked, the idea of ranking such things against each other is almost sadly hilarious.
