: The only think that I see as amiss in your hypothesis is/are the lekgolo
: found by the covenant in debris orbiting a planet, and also the lekgolos
: use in exploring the forunner dreadnaught in High Charity. (See Contact
: Harvest) I fail to see a way in which lekgolo would survive long periods
: on nothing but forunner scrap metal. There has been to my knowledge no
: indication the the normal alloy has anywhere near the necessary volatility
: to keep the reaction going. This wouldn't be an issue if the lekgolo
: hadn't been there long, however the novel implies that the organisms had
: been eating the wreckage for quite some time.

Yes, Ive never been clear on the Te planet and the orbiting moons thing. I think that they evolved on the planet and were transported to the moons.

How could they live on the moons?

I imagine that if they do have breeder reactors then all they need is a source of Thorium or any other fertile material. Thorium has been found on Earth, the moon and in meteorites. So there may have been trace amounts on the moons.

But if we look at some uses for Thorium mentioned here we see:

Thorium and thorium compounds, especially the oxide, have the interesting property of having very high melting temperatures. As a result, it is used for high temperature applications such as coatings on tungsten filaments in light bulbs and for high temperature laboratory equipment. It is also used to make specialized lenses in optical equipment. Thorium is alloyed with magnesium to create lightweight, high strength metals. Such alloys were used in the aerospace industry. Thorium use is being studied as a non-prolific fuel source by the nuclear energy industry.

We know from CH that the Lekgolo were eating parts of Forerunner installations. These may have provided a source of concentrated Thorium.

There are a lot of videos on youtube about the LFTR reactor and the Molten Salt Reactor programs. It appears that the reactors can be fueled simply by dropping Thorium pellets directly into the reactors.

If a source of refined Thorium is present then the Lekgolo may not have needed the support of an entire ecosystem. Lekgolo on Covenant ships may be able to exists on mineral pellets. Like cat-food for Hunters.
