I'd love it, but with some caveats. | |

In Response To: Re: If it's pitch-perfect, awesome. Otherwise... (ThorsHammer) Okay, I'm going to to this in both a short "tl;dr" version and my typical ShadowOfTheVoid-style long version. SHORT VERSION: I'd definitely get Halo 1 just for the ability to play on XBL. A couple of changes could stand to be made to its gameplay (pistol damage nerf, AR accuracy boost), but I'd be fine with it if it played like it always has. OTOH Halo 2 definitely needs several changes made to its gameplay, though, including but not limited to eliminating all the glitches and reducing the plasma pistol's tracking. Both games could stand to have a current-gen graphical facelift, but maybe without gimmicks like motion blur. Features from recent games like Forge and Saved Films would be nice but I'd consider them optional. Finally, no adding any new invisible walls or kill barriers, especially in Campaign. LONG VERSION: Since Halo 1 never got to be an XBL title and Halo 2 can no longer be played on XBL, I'd love to see re-releases of them in the near future. It wouldn't hurt if they were graphically enhanced remakes much like the recent re-release of Perfect Dark. Let's be honest. While the first two Halo games looked great for their time (the first especially is still a very sharp, smooth game despite how limited it is compared to current-gen games) 3D games don't age very well, and the older it is, the worse it ages. I'd love to see Halo 1 & 2 re-released with updated current-gen graphics. Probably not the Reach engine as it is considering the issues with slowdown not to mention excessive motion blur. Maybe a simpler version with fewer modern visual tricks (e.g., no motion blur, no weird filters) so as to retain the sharp, smooth, clean look of the original but with the higher resolution, higher poly count, longer draw distance, and enhanced animation (esp. facial animation) we see in Reach. However, I would not want 343 using the character models from Reach, except maybe Captain Keyes. Character designs should be as close to the original designs found in Halo 1 & 2, just with a higher poly count and higher-res textures. However, except for the AR, which should retain its iconic Halo 1 look, I'd be fine with the Reach designs for weapons and vehicles. Now, what I'd be more apprehesive about are gameplay changes, at least to Halo 1. To be honest, — and most of you probably already know this about me — there's not a whole lot I'd like to change about the first game. It's still my favorite in the series and it's almost (but not quite) perfect. Maybe the vehicle damage system could be made universally applicable to all vehicles in both MP and Campaign instead of being restricted to Covenant vehicles in Campaign. Also, the weapons could stand to be tweaked. The pistol's damage and rate of fire should be trimmed a bit to bring its kill time in line with the AR (4 shots to kill instead of three and 3 rounds/sec RoF instead of 3.5 should suffice), the accuracy of the AR and plasma rifle should be improved (cut the spread in half), and the Needler's projectiles sped up so as to make it useful in MP. That's about it, really. Then again, I'd be fine with everything staying as is, and even if there are gameplay changes, there should also be the option to play with everything as it originally was. Oh, and this hypothetical Halo 1 re-released definitely should have the PC version MP maps added to it. For Halo 2, OTOH, I would absolutely insist that there be changes made to its gameplay. If H2 is rereleased, 343 should, in generally decreasing order of necessity, make the following changes to the core gameplay:
While Halo 2 excelled in terms of story and MP stage design, I always found it to be lacking in terms of gameplay. I likely wouldn't bother playing its multiplayer component online unless most of the changes I outlined were made. Furthermore, I wouldn't mind it if the game were a bit more forgiving on Legendary. 343 should definitely tone down the damage enemies inflict by, say 20-30%, and they should also nerf the damn Jackal snipers (1-shot-kill + 100% accuracy = fail). For either game, there are changes that I wouldn't insist on, such as adding Forge or Saved Films. While I would like to see those features, I'd be satisfied simply with the ability to play them on XBL. Conversely, there are "features" in more recent Halo games I would definitely NOT want to see added to a re-release of Halo 1 & 2, namely putting more invisible walls or Reach-style soft-kill zones in Campaign, or blocking off popular spots in MP maps (e.g., the top of that one side building on Headlong that's only accessible via Banshee) with said barriers. Whatever barriers we had in the original releases of those games were more than sufficient.
