In Response To: Re: Halo remakes? *Reach SP* (RyanTheHeretic)
: This where you lose me. Redesigning levels, sure. New gametypes, go for it.
: Patching continuity by referencing or even including Prophets, Brutes,
: Drones and Engineers, sure. Adjusting physics, weapon balance, etc., okay,
: I can see the point of that.
Liking this so far.
: But you surely can't be serious when you say you really would like the stuff
: you quote from my previous post?
I was exaggerating a bit, but it's stuff like that I really don't mind. Foehammer as a Falcon pilot wouldn't make any sense in the Maw cutscene, but I wouldn't mind seeing a few Falcons here and there. Mk IV armor would make any sense either, but I'd be totally fine with an updated armor design. Dual-wielding Repeaters is silly, but adding in dual-wielding would be cool, as would be adding in Repeaters. And replacing the pair of Elites guarding the Silent Cartographer map room with Chieftans? Sounds fun to me!
: I mean, I don't want to sound like I'm taking this a bit too seriously, but
: damn, don't you think... I dunno, don't you think you're being a bit...
: immature about this? Maybe you're not much of a Combat Evolved fan in
: relation to the other games, and that's fine. But from those four points
: alone, it sounds like you'd happily kill all the little things which made
: CE what it was.
Au contraire, I'd say CE is my favorite game of all of them. Heck, I've been on a mod team where we updated some of the graphics, changed some of the encounters, modified weapon properties, added in new weapons, new areas, new vehicles, new enemies (Brutes!), and all sorts of other things. Why would we spend so much of our free time on that? Because we love the game. I know every encounter like the back of my hand, and appreciate every nuance in the game, from the bouncy vehicle physics to the rockslide megabattle to the delayed needler supercombine explosion to abusing the game's physics to explore every nook and cranny in a level.
Don't get me wrong, I love CE, but I already own that game, for both PC and Xbox. I don't want 343 to give me a game I already own with shiny new graphics. Keep all of the iconic setpieces and cutscenes and so forth, but freshen them up. Surprise me with new/modified encounters. I don't want to walk through the game knowing every encounter, every vehicle spawn, every weapon cache beforehand.
: Theatre, Forge, vehicle boarding, assassinations, Wraiths, Engineers, Brutes,
: Drones, Skirmishers, new weapons, new levels and new gametypes, I'd
: TOTALLY be up for all of those, and much more besides. I'm not saying keep
: Halo 1 static in a remake, but at least give it some respect.
Perhaps we actually (mostly) agree. I wouldn't want 343 to replace everything from scratch, and I would certainly want them to keep the iconic setpieces and memorable battles around, but I want the whole Halo sandbox to play around in, and I don't want everything in the game to feel instantly familiar.
Here's what it comes down to. Either they make too few changes and we get an uninspired copy-paste job. Yes, it would be fun, but I could just as well play the original, which preserves every nuance. Or they could go too far, change everything, and give us essentially a new campaign. Ignoring the canon issues, that sounds pretty awesome and fun.
