In Response To: Re: Old halo games remake by 343 industries? (RyanTheHeretic)
: What? What's the point in remaking a game if you're not going to be faithful
: to it?
Halo gameplay and storytelling has evolved since 2001. I already own and love Halo:CE, so don't just give me that with HD graphics. I don't see the point of a remake if you don't try to improve upon it.
: Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against crazy new gameplay ideas or
: all-new epic storylines, but surely they might as well just make an
: all-new game for that sort of thing?
I guess I'd rather have an all-new game than a too-faithful remake.
: The way I see it, trying to inject lots of new stuff into an old game is a
: terrible idea. It will only result in a mediocre compromise. All the
: little things that made the original game good will have been overwritten
: by the new things, but the new things will have been limited and stunted
: by the limitations of what is expected of a remake of an old game. The new
: content will not have the proper setting in which to flourish and grow and
: be fully-developed.
Obviously, it's all about balance. Heck, even by trying to remake the game with Reach's engine, we're already losing some of the details that made CE so fun. Stuff like the bouncy physics, for example. I don't think they should go crazy and rewrite the whole story and change every encounter, but I'd like to see stuff improved where possible, and access to a greater sandbox of weapons, vehicles, abilities, enemies, and so forth.
For example, Pillar of Autumn. Most of that level is purposeless, repetitive hallways that make no sense in a ship of that size. Really, 343 would be better off scrapping that whole level and redoing it from scratch. The Maw is also a mess. Give us a warthog run, but have it actually make sense. And who would really mind if The Library was completely overhauled?
: That to me sounds like a terrible compromise. If you're going to do a remake,
: I think it should be done faithfully. If you want to make new content, why
: limit yourself to the confines of an older game? You'd tarnish the
: original game and pointlessly restrict yourself.
No remake is going to stop me from loving the original Halo, and a too-faithful remake seems like a wasted endeavour to me. And if 343 isn't going to try and make CE a better game, with more modern sensibilities, why even bother?
: The only exception I'd consider is filling in "blanks" in the
: games. ie. an all-new epilogue chapter for Halo 2 which takes place on the
: Forerunner Ship or something like that.
I'd love to see the cut volcano level from Halo 1 and the Covie ship and Forerunner Tank levels from Halo 2.
