In Response To: Re: Flying the Hawk (Mid7night) : The aero is actually not bad, in forward flight. The problem is with weight : and balance in hover-mode. If you did a proper, realistic mass : distribution, the CG is quite a ways forward. WAY more forward than the : fans. So if you throttle up for takeoff, you'll immediately flip forwards. : That means you need some other means, or force, or something, to : counteract that forward-pitching moment. That's the ONLY thing I've had to : "fudge." I put the CG closer to the "realistic" : position (which, coincidentally, is why it flies so well in forward : flight), and added some internal "puffers" to give it the torque : required to achieve a stable hover. I'll probably make up some fancy story : about how the force is generated. ;-) But if flies great, it's a blast! If the nose is very heavy, it's not inconceivable for some heavy weight battery or some other doodad to be in the back end balancing it. Now, as for hover mode - how easily does it tip over into an unrecoverable fall if you bank left or right too much? This was one of the big problems with the osprey's design and I think it's an unavoidable one with the side-by-side rotors, as they are.
