Thanks for posting this, it's good to hear two sides of this ever popular debate.

However, I find myself utterly convinced that Roger Ebert is dead wrong in his stance. I support the belief that games have the largest untapped potential for conveying ideas, emotions and enjoyment. Games can appeal to a wide assortment of senses/experiences. Not only is there the potential in it's audio and visuals, but giving the player the ability to interact with a world can be a very powerful experience. Not to even acknowledge the fact is foolhardy.

Rogert Ebert reminds me of the "intellectuals" who disregarded J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of The Rings" as unsophisticated. For it could never be held on the same level as The Iliad and other literary classics. Needless to say, a great deal of people regard "The Lord of the Rings" as nothing short of a masterpiece of literature. To not call that art would be a pretty harsh (and somewhat deluded) statement.

I know that not all games set out to be art, that many aim to be just a fun time and nothing more. But just as writing, drawing and speaking are used for non-artistic functions every day, their potential to be high art remains. To say Video Games can only be used in one sense and can never be high art is closed-minded and flat out wrong.

Video Games as a medium of expression are still very, very new to the scene. I for one, am excited to see what new boundaries can be pushed with Games as our tools.

I apologize in advance for any typos... :P
