In Response To: Re: How does everyone feel about... (Metalingus627)

: We don't know how many were left after the Array fired. For all we know,
: there could have been just a couple dozen on the Ark when the rings were
: fired. Not exactly a galactic clean-up crew.

: And another thing to note: A lot of their planet-side installations were
: buried. Earth, Reach, Coral, Harvest, ect: All of the Forerunner relics
: had been buried in the ground. More than likely they were buried by
: Sentinels. For all we know, any and all Forerunner installations on
: Sanghelios and the Prophets home world had been buried as well, but at
: some point in their history they found the relics and thus began the road
: to the Covenant. Knowing what to look for (and even discovering tools that
: found it for them) led them to find installations in other systems, and
: eventually Harvest.

: The Forerunners didn't mean to leave their technology out of Humanities
: hands, they wanted us to find it when the time was right by burying it so
: that they would only find it after developing the kind of technology that
: could locate and dig it up. What they didn't count on was other species
: finding it first and using it for nefarious purposes. You have to keep in
: mind that the Prophets and the Elites had reached modern-level technology
: long before we did. They developed (and stagnated) a long time before
: Humans began reaching out into the stars. The Forerunners probably thought
: that Humanity would develop the quickest because it was directly related
: to them. What they didn't realize was that we were (arguably) unworthy
: inheritors, because we didn't develop quickly. Instead we bathed ourselves
: in bloodshed for thousands of years until it was too late to keep up with
: the developing Covenant.

: What the Forerunners had wrong was not their view of how to hand the galaxy
: to the Humans. They were wrong that we were worthy to inherit it at all.
: Origins II plays up this fact.

: Did that make any sense? I'm a little bit worn out and probably not making
: cohesive thoughts.

It makes perfect sense, now that I think about it. Thank you, Metalingus627.

Your insights along with those who answered this latest question have helped me make sense of this aspect of the story, and I thank you all for your assistance.

As for Origins II, that is very true. Another thing I remember from the commentary from the good Mr. O'Connor is that the Forerunners were very much at peace with their own nature, while the Humans, and perhaps the other sentients we know of, were not.

In the context of the Forerunner-Flood war, I think one could argue that the situation there is a case of the Forerunners being too much at peace, and not adapting their nature quickly enough to the situation.

Truth be told, for all of its power, the Flood are not invincible; even when they were pushed to the brink of near-total extinction and defeat, the Forerunners managed to bring the down with them. Going further, had the Forerunners acted quickly enough to not just study but actively fight the Flood incursion, it could've been contained and eliminated.

The key, it seems, is to catch the Flood early enough in their life cycle, and blow them into oblivion until the last Flood cell is ashes. The war and the Halo event didn't just cost the Forerunners; it cost the Flood dearly as well.
