What I find more interesting is the difference between him and Daisy vs the other escapees. Everyone else committed suicide, Ralph took at shot at himself, and Daisy walked away.

Seeing someone that looks just like you, living what was your life, with the knowledge that there's no going back, not ever, even if you knocked on the door and said "Hey mom! I'm back!" is one hell of a mind fuck. Everyone else dealt with it by (likely) falling into depression and killing themselves. Ralph probably reacted with anger and took a shot at "himself" and then ran without waiting around to see the result. Daisy just walked away.

Ralph was probably so loaded up with whether it was murder or suicide, that he just couldn't return to normal, thus the washout. Daisy walked away, but was probably just as torn and confused as Ralph. The difference was she managed to put it behind her, mostly, and move on. You can see elsewhere though, particularly in scenes involving Ralph in the present, that she was never the same again. She wasn't as cold and distant as every other Spartan we've seen.

It's a profound life changing experience either way. Daisy just managed to bounce back faster than Ralph, and that's why she stayed, and he got canned.
