That balance is "how : much mystery, mystique, etc. can be maintained while also telling a : coherent story that is logical but not answering every single : question." : In other words, how can your story be written without being either to dull or : very shallow and lacking real substance and/or context. : For me at least, this is one of the more notable issues with the Forerunners. : We now know that they were these seemingly self-appointed : "guardians" and cultivators of the galaxy, obsessed with : maintaining and perpetuating the biodiversity of the galaxy, are very : peaceful, "noble", etc. : We also know the reasons for their defeat and departure from the Milky Way, : and that they are somehow connected to and related to Humanity beyond just : the succession of power etc. : But what is missing, story-wise and thematically speaking, is what is that : connection, and why they gave Humanity the status of 'Reclaimer', i.e. : inheritor, successor, redeemer, etc. and yet that they seemed to have made : every effort to deny Humanity their designated inheritance, and give it to : everyone else, thereby rendering the Reclaimers powerless and defenseless. : From that standpoint, the Halo story is not one just about survival, heroism, : and reclaiming ones own world, but also a story of a designated inheritor : being not only denied their inheritance, but also being persecuted, : killed, and abused because of it. : Or more succinctly, the chosen heir to supremacy is being preemptively : murdered and persecuted by its designated subjects, its fated inferiors. : That means that the servants, the subjects, the "charges", the : inferiors are raising a hand against their chosen and designated masters. : That, in my opinion, is a mystery that has to be answered; why are the chosen : rulers of the galaxy forced into a position where they are not only robbed : of their inheritance, but those who would inevitably be their servants, : charges, and dependents, are given the keys to power and the wherewithal : to abuse it and murder their rightful superiors and masters? Kind of already been answered in Contact Harvest. *sp, in case you haven't read it* A Forerunner technology being used by the Covenant identifies Harvest as covered in Forerunner relics. The Prophets show this to the AI in the Dreadnought (Mendicant Bias), who reveals that the "Reclamations" are "Reclaimers," and he identifies them as his makers. He states his intention to bring them to the Ark, but is disconnected before he can leave High Charity. The Prophets realize that if the secret got out that their entire religion was based on a lie, that all Forerunners had died and partook in the Great Journey, that the Covenant would fall apart. So instead they cover it up and order the genocide of the human race, to ensure that the secret would never get out.
