In Response To: Re: Unnamed Elite Major in The Package (kanbo) : Really, you shouldn't even have to be put into the position to where you need : to explain this. We have really become a bunch of spoiled whiners. You could say we've become spoiled whiners, but in many regards we haven't. Careful planning and story direction would make it so that things don't need to be retconned and thus make the "safety" unnecessary. People are whining and bitching about Bungie retconning the novels when in actuality the novels didn't have an extreme amount of input from Bungie and Eric Nylund was given a lot of creative freedom. So oh well if Bungie's changed some things in the games to make them make a bit more sense. I don't like how every single story in Legends can't be dated. I don't like how a lot of things in the more recent novels can't be dated. Too much safety can lead to alienation. Yeah, you get your BS Polices and Riceatrons out there who will discount an entire freaking video game if you dare to retcon even the slightest of things, but they're the crazy extreme and hardly represent the millions who will understand and most likely agree with the retcons that have been made (unless they're so sweeping and ridiculous that the retcons themselves are extremes). The fact of the matter is, Microsoft/343 Industries is now in control, and if there's some huge epic plan, it should be well fleshed out with ideas on dates and things. Now, I totally agree with Frankie keeping stuff totally secret so as not to reveal certain plot points that they want to expand upon later (he mentioned talking to Nylund about some pretty juicy and interesting stuff), and there's obviously the gaming department that we don't know about, but if this stuff isn't already figured out within the company and set in stone, that appears to be a problem. There should be no need to do any major retcons unless it flat out makes no sense or wasn't worth talking about to begin with (time warping crystals, or keeping Johnson alive because they liked the character and thought he was bad ass, so forget him dying in H1). Let's say that something in Prototype just fits in better in 2552 but for some reason was stated to exist in 2525--it clearly should have never been stated as such to begin with, internally or publicly. No need to play it safe if it's that ridiculous. And yes, this was just a random extreme example. Mystery for mystery's sake? Awesome. Go for it. We love mystery and rampant speculation. But take a look at the more recent novels, where dates and things have been almost entirely removed all together. If the story isn't fleshed out well enough to have these things figured out in the time line, then (in my opinion) they are made to seem not very important or worthy of "historical record." Why even write about these events that were so crucial and epic to have taken place when they did, but not let us know when exactly they actually took place? What safety could you possibly need to keep a date from The Duel? Why would that date ever need to change? Yeah, 5-10 year plans and new ideas and things, but c'mon. Why make a universe or story at all if we're going to walk on egg shells all around it because we may want to change something later? Get some things solid and make MORE of the universe set in stone to continue to lay a foundation for more mystery and questions and speculation over other stories. In conclusion, in reference to Frankie, too much safety can be a bad thing, especially when Cole Protocol or some of the stories in Legends probably seriously do not need safety on dates (and if they change 6 years from now because something works far better and, knowing you, you explain it to us in all of a paragraph, then we'll get it). Connections to stories that aren't public yet, well good, go for it (but don't make that be every single reason every time--not that you would). Deliberate mystery? Good. So just to reiterate, mystery and connections are good, but not dating every single thing? C'mon.
