I'll agree its a nice touch, but I also have to admit that when one steps back, the absence doesn't really detract from much either.
When I think about it, the Star Wars fiction doesn't really seem to ever involve dates at all, its usually measured just by the number of years before/after key events, usually A New Hope.
I wouldn't underestimate the potential difficulties and problems, given what Eric was saying about trying to write GoO and the huge problems and amount of time that had to spent thinking of how fast various ships were to make dates check out.
