Yes please, QUIT WITHOUT SAVING *longish*

In Response To: Re: The million dollar question (Simpsons Rule)

I'm glad that yourself and others have been championing this issue over the years. I'm completely behind this and would very much like a QUIT WITHOUT SAVING option.

Firstly, there are often battles or sections of play which I'd like to be able to replay over and over, starting from a saved checkpoint - and I'm sure I'm far from alone there. But if you get one or more checkpoints in the course of your play or if you get a checkpoint very quickly at the conclusion of that play (things that regrettably happen with many battles, something I spoke out against in my H3 article), you can't simply revert. The only way you can get back to your start checkpoint is to either eject the disc and reload, or switch off and reload, or (on the 360) exit via the dashboard then reload. That's a time-consuming pain that counts against replayability. With a QUIT WITHOUT SAVING option you'd be able to get back to your saved checkpoint a lot more quickly. Not as quickly as an option to revert to your last saved checkpoint of course, which would be far superior, but that's unlikely to be on the cards because of the potential confusion people might have between saved and unsaved checkpoints (a confusion encouraged from day one with H1's REVERT TO SAVED label being so misleading, as it actually refers to the last checkpoint, not your saved checkpoint).

Secondly, it would save me time in doing the stuff I do - and which I write about for other people to do - trying to engineer novel gameplay situations. Such engineering often involves having to try some tricky phase of work repeatedly, starting from a particular saved checkpoint. But if you hit other checkpoints along the way, the only way to get back to your starting checkpoint for a repeat attempt is to do that laborious reload process I just mentioned. Painful, and discouraging. I've put this concern second because it's probably only a concern for a much smaller group of people, but it applies equally to people trying to do elaborate tricks and suchlike. They'd want the option just as much as me.

Besides, the option wouldn't just be a boon for the likes of us off-piste types (or maybe that should be piste-off types, hee hee). There could be a lot of casual players who've never realized that they can bypass the save-and-quit business via the laborious mechanisms mentioned above; mechanisms which are not terribly obvious and actually border on feeling like underhand trickery. As such, they may have been missing out on a lot of battle-replaying fun, thinking that if they want to do that section again, they'll have to restart the level and play through to it again. The presence of the QUIT WITHOUT SAVING option would give them a strong hint that they don't have to do that!

So yes Bungie, please add QUIT WITHOUT SAVING. It surely wouldn't be difficult, it scarcely makes the menu more complex, it would have benefits extending to all players, and it also wouldn't cause any detrimental effect on folk not interested in that option.

Like some other folk here, I'd also welcome a SAVE WITHOUT QUITTING option (a.k.a. SAVE LAST CHECKPOINT, another way of phrasing it), but unfortunately there are issues with that which I think will rule it out. If such an option were present, some people might get the idea that they should use it after each checkpoint, to make real sure they don't somehow lose their progress. Or maybe they'd do it deliberately anyway (i.e. despite being savvy about how things work). That's going to degrade the fluidity of the gameplay for them, and Bungie wouldn't like to think people are doing that. They rightly want things to be immersive, and I think their checkpoint system and menu options were designed with that in mind, right from the start. Sadly, this counts against having that option. In any case I think Bungie would also view it as one extra option too many (they'll want to keep things fairly minimal), plus it might make people's heads spin when seen in conjunction with QUIT WITHOUT SAVING.

I see a few people making other checkpoint-related suggestions in this thread, and I myself would love to be able to revert to the last saved checkpoint, but Bungie will surely want to keep things very close to what they've had before, so I think the most we can hope for is the simple addition of SAVE WITHOUT QUITTING.

Bad Cyborg - Not quitting any time soon!
