Sorry, I don't know a thing about the PC version. It's an interesting question though - why only 8x? Perhaps they thought it would be better because of how close PC players would typically be to the screen? So 10x would've made things look a bit too zoomed? Oh… stop press: I've just done an archive search. Someone queried the 8x in 2003 and Louis said "They used the Korean codebase, which uses an 8x zoom instead of 10x. (Fewer bugs. :) )". There was a similar answer given when someone asked in 2004 (though one other answer was "I think Gearbox said they changed it because at 10x the sniper rifle was to hard to control with a mouse"). Handy thing, that search facility!
