They weren't lasers. They were guided for one thing so I wouldn't call them cliché at all.
Shouldn't be too hard to imagine there are different firing modes. Not exactly efficient to use the same weapon on a tiny fighter as you would a capital ship or when trying to glass the surface of a planet. Most likely a less powerful blast with a greater rate of fire.
More to the point is that the OF92/EVA was able to deploy some kind of countermeasure.
Wouldn't think there would be an equivalent to chaff for defeating plasma rounds.

This is a pretty valid one and sort of contradicts the oft repeated (and quite recently for that matter) notion about how the Spartans couldn't take their success into space.
Well, we just saw them do exactly that.
I know they are trying to make something spectacular, but those Seraphs just dropped like flies.
