I thought that was a little odd as well, but then I started to think that perhaps this takes place after Halo 3? Lack of time/date stamps makes me a sad panda. :(
However, that whole story was like a death metal album realized in the Halo universe. 10 for effort, 8 for effectiveness. ;)

Yeah, that one really surprised me. I've always wondered what happened to those Spartans who didn't quite make the cut, and having him feel dejected and eventually a tad rebellious was a refreshing characterization for a group of individuals who are mostly treated as robots rather than humans. Excellent book so far (have only read the first two stories so far).
