Admittedly I need to watch the ep a few more times before I feel comfortable getting too deep with it (preferably without my nieces screeching in my ear the whole time.) But my general impression is that it's the encompassing role of the Covenant in the Sangheili's personal and spiritual lives that doesn't settle well with him. That there's this split when it comes to how the Prophets "revealed" the nature of the Forerunner to them and, hey, all of these awfully convenient benefits that go along with it. Perhaps it is the nature of the San Shyuum's portrayal -- that the Forerunners are now something everyone can attain through the Great Journey -- that is the issue? Before the Sangheili revered the Forerunner and their gifts, but did not approach the nature of the Forerunner in such a personal way (no reverse engineering of tech, etc.) I don't think they believed they could become like the Forerunner in the way the Prophets preach: the idea of everyone, Grunts, Lekgolo, whoever simply believing the San Shyuum's words and gaining a pass to this Journey and, by extension, godhood. For a race that long treated the artifacts of the gods with such conservatism, this approach could be seen as an infringement on tradition? It would seem too convenient almost? A ploy to make everyone work together in this new Covenant (which we know it was.) After living so singularly and proudly for so long and relying on no one but themselves and their own honor it wouldn't surprise me if some Elites felt this was a fishy concept invading the core principles of their beliefs and, by extension, absorbing Sangheili culture and solidarity into the Covenant fold. Virtually eliminating their ability to stand alone as Sangheili in a subtle fashion, but glossed over by the San Shyuum giving the illusion that the Sangheili are still their own people (by letting them keep some of their traditions.) Sure, the Elites are one of the founding stones of the Covenant and it couldn't operate without them (so they thought for a long time, anyway) but where does it end and the Sangheili truly begin? This blurring of who they are and what the Covenant is could leave a sour taste in some mouths. ...if that makes any sense. I haven't had enough coffee yet. Fal's beef could be simpler than that.
